Overview

The Ausangate Trek is one of the most breathtaking and remote high-altitude hikes in Peru. This 5-day adventure offers a deep immersion into the natural beauty of the Vilcanota Mountain Range, featuring snow-capped peaks, alpine lakes, hot springs, and encounters with traditional Andean communities. The highlight of the trek includes views of the sacred Ausangate Mountain (6,384 m) and the colorful Vinicunca, also known as Rainbow Mountain.

Day 1: Cusco – Ocongate – Tinqui – Upis

  • 04:00: Departure from Cusco to Tinqui by bus.
  • 07:30: Breakfast en route (not included).
  • 09:00: Start trekking toward Upis village.
  • 12:30: Arrival at the Upis school.
  • 14:30: Lunch.
  • 15:00: Continue to Upis village.
  • 16:00: Dinner and overnight in tents at Upis.

Day 2: Upis – Arapa Pass – Ausangate Cocha

  • 07:00: Breakfast.
  • 08:00: Trek to Arapa Pass.
  • 13:00: Lunch along the trail.
  • 18:00: Dinner and overnight at Ausangate Cocha.

Day 3: Ausangate Cocha – Palomani Pass – Huchuy Pinaya

  • 07:00: Breakfast.
  • 08:00: Trek to the highest point of the route, Palomani Pass (5,200 m).
  • 13:00: Lunch.
  • 18:00: Dinner and overnight at Huchuy Pinaya.

Day 4: Huchuy Pinaya – Qampa Pass – Pacchanta

  • 07:00: Breakfast.
  • 08:00: Trek through Pinaya Valley and Ticllacocha.
  • 13:00: Lunch at Qomercocha.
  • 18:00: Dinner and overnight in Pacchanta (optional visit to hot springs).

Day 5: Pacchanta – Tinqui – Cusco

  • 07:00: Breakfast.
  • 08:00: Final trek to Tinqui.
  • 12:00: Lunch and return to Cusco.
  • 19:00: Estimated arrival in Cusco.
